I need to make a painting or collage of a hobby or interest of mine for my english class, but none of my hobbies are easily portrable. (most of mine are very passive hobbies ie. painting, jewelry-making) I need an idea of some active hobbies or interests that people have. Thanks!

knitting or crocheting is fantastic. So is wood carving. Just talk to your school about bringing knives. they might not like that.

The most portable hobby is by far stamp collecting.

Grab a bunch of stamps and affix them to a simple sheet of paper. If you are an artist you may do a nice color design surrounding your stamps and connecting them together in a funny (or a serious) way.

You can’t get any lighter and portable than this…

When I saw your question, I was going to say beading and other forms of jewelry making are highly portable. You don’t seem to think so, however. Remember, you don’t need to take ALL of your jewelry stuff with you to show some of it off. Knitting is also quite portable. Cross-stitch works well for portability.

I’d suggest picking a hobby you really do already have and enjoy, and then asking a question about how to make it portable, instead of trying to find a new hobby for this class project.

A very good portable hobby is scrapbooking. Scrapbooking is a fun and decorative way to show off your pictures and we all have loads of it. Supplies can be bought over the Internet. I carry most of my papers and embellishments to a workshop I attend every Thursday.

A nice craft(portable) is using a ‘Weave it loom’ they come on all shapes and sizes and from 10 to 20 Cm’s weave wool in tabby style makes great scarves and ponchos

Well, you already mentioned it! jewelry making! its protable, and easy. Check out commumities such as oveBites and Bruises, they are quite famous on the internet for things such as this. And good luck! :)

Why not stick to your painting? With a few pencils or graphite sticks you can draw in monochrome, or you can add watercolour pencils and paint with these (all you need is a few small brushes, a little water and a small palate). These and a sketchbook would all fit in a sketchbook-sized box 2″ deep, and weigh next to nothing (use a watertight jar for water!) You probably won’t use an easel in an English class, but a desktop easel packs to a similar size an can be bought for £10-£15 ($20 -$30). A friend of mine carries a small piece of slate for a palate – this is hard enough to crush the end of the pencil before painting. He paints miniatures (postcard size or smaller) and carries everything in a large pencil case!

    have fun!
