I have a rural property with a large ditch drain out the front (no curb or channel). We need access to our block and want to build a drain/driveway thing over the ditch, but I don’t know what it’s called, or where to start looking for DIY instructions.

go to and research it good luck
It’s called a CULVERT. These can be purchased from your local builders supply. Usually your township looks after this. There are specific sizes that are used in certain areas. Contact your township and investigate it before you spend the cash.
Check your local highway dept and see if they give or sell drain culvert pipe and give your measurements desired. You can also use 3/4″ stone with filter fabric which gives a more stable foundation for subgrade and meters drainage. either way works
The culver pipe will require compacting soils around pipe or concrete to secure and additional stone over. Culver pipe can be either galvanized or pvc corrugated and perforrated.
Filter fabric/ geofabric with stone requires what is called a burrito wrap. in which you place fabric with an 6″ to 2″ depending the ditch size of stone warping the fabric over to completely cover stone. and then placing additional stone or soils on top of.
Its what we recommend in the engineering business for residential construction and
Commercial is always the drainage stone for rec. up to designer to specify culverts otherwise.
